Ceramic-Metal Interfaces and the Spreading of Reactive Liquids

A number of solid-state and liquid-state processing techniques are available for tailoringthe properties of a ceramic-metal interface. While manyof the techniques are successfully used in industry, themechanisms for their microstructural formation are notwell understood. For situations where a liquid metal isin contact with a solid ceramic substrate, the wettingand spreading behavior of the liquid is critical indetermining the final microstructure and properties ofthe interface, which may control the properties of the component or system.
