Objectives: the objective of this study is to present the assessment of practical training offered to foreign pharmacy students and to propose a structured program for their training. Materials and methods: this is a descriptive study of the profile of hospital practical training for 3, 6 and 12 month long program for pharmacy student from France at the pharmacy department of CHU Sainte-Justine (Montreal, Quebec). The program has been developed taking into account both guidelines published in France and Quebec and the past 10-year experience. Results: the literature review has provided a comparison of diplomas and practical training for undergraduated and graduated pharmacy students in United States of America, Quebec and France. The study provides a comparison of practical training offered at CHU Sainte-Justine hospital for 1st cycle and 2nd cycle Quebec pharmacy students as well as for foreign pharmacy student and a profile of creative activities. One-hundred forty-three projects were realized with a significant contribution of pharmacy students with the publication of 54 structured abstracts and posters in scientific meetings and 89 articles in scientific journals. From 1996 to 2007, foreign students have contributed to 35 % of creative activities while their presence represents only 23 % of student-days. Conclusion: this study shows that, despite differences in formation and the recognition of diplomas between countries, hospital practical training in Quebec is feasible and the diffusion of a structure program can contribute to meet the expectations of all stakeholders.
