The race took off last week in North America to jump-start a sustainable alternative fuels industry, as Unitedand Alaska Airlines flew the first commercial flights usingbiofuel blends. The real test for sustainability is yet tocome and hinges on economics: which feedstocks andprocesses can scale up fast enough to reduce costs for avia-tion biofuels, which are currently three-to-four times theprice of conventional jet fuel.
