BIOFUELS –-Dutch flag carrier KLM began a five-to-six week test program of 80 commercial biofuel flights between Oslo and Amsterdam Mar. 31. The Embraer 190 aircraft used on KLM’s Cityhopper flights between the two capitals will measure the efficiency of biofuel made from camelina in comparison with regular oil-derived kerosene. The biofuel is produced within the European Commission-funded ITAKA (Initiative Towards SustAinable Kerosene for Aviation) project and supplied by Air BP and SkyNRG. Oslo airport became the first airport in the world to supply biofuel directly from its hydrant system in January but the fuel being used in the tests will be delivered by separate fuel trucks for testing purposes (JFI Feb.1’16). “We have for some time been cooperating with different partners, including those united within the scope of the KLM Corporate Biofuel Program, to stimulate the development of the [biofuel] market. Our new cooperative relationship with Embraer and Oslo Airport (Avinor) serves to underscore just how important this is,” said Boet Kreiken, Managing Director of KLM Cityhopper in a statement.
