摘要

The dieselization of Europe may have finally come to an end after government-sponsored car-scrapping schemes led to a surge of gasoline sales last year. Al Bedwell, a senior consultant with industry experts JD Power Automotive Forecasting, tells JFI that state-funded initiatives to support the car industry during the economic downturn meant diesel models made up just 40% of European car sales last year, down from a peak of 54% in 2007. Europe's surge towards diesel began in the early 1990s and led to the region's growing jet fuel deficit. European refineries were originally designed to maximize gasoline production, which meant that growing diesel demand was initially met by sacrificing jet fuel output. A large program of refinery investment has since reduced that practice, but Europe still imports more than 1 million tons of jet a month. Government car-scrapping schemes across Europe boosted sales of small, cheaper gasoline-powered models. The swing was most extreme in Germany, where diesel sales collapsed from 43% to 26% last year at the same time that overall car sales boomed. Cars classified as basic or small took a 45% share of the European market last year, according to JD Power data, up from 37% in 2007.
