BIOFUELS - US-based Virent says that its patented process for producing biojet fuel from sugars and cellulosic material and combining it with a fully synthetic fuel can achieve reductions of more than 50% in particulate emissions compared to conventional jet fuel. Virent’s Synthesized Aromatic Kerosene (SAK) was produced at the firm’s pilot demonstration plant in Madison, Wisconsin. The SAK was blended at a 13% ratio with 87% gas-to-liquids jet fuel. Emissions data were included with other results in a report released by Rolls Royce, British Airways and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Testing by Rolls Royce that was supported by the FAA’s Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions, and Noise program has progressed from the laboratory to actual rig testing on engines under ASTM’s certification process.
