Air quality in underground coal mines is critical to the occupational health and safety of underground workers and the safe running of equipment. Sufficient quality air must be provided for mine personnel to breath, as well as to render harmless all toxic, noxious and explosive naturally occurring gases, as well as any introduced gases (e.g. diesel exhaust). Fresh air is also introduced to reduce dust levels and to provide cooling for mine workers and machinery. The natural flow of air in a mine is usually insufficient for these purposes, meaning air must be pumped in mechanically.
