In 2012, underground coal mining in the US produced over 310 million t, with longwall mining accounting for over 53% of this production. On average, longwall mines were over 80% more productive in 2012 than continuous mining operations. Given the volume and rate of coal produced on longwall faces, the potential to generate large quantities of respirable coal mine dust also exists.
