Data centers represent one of the fastest growing air conditioning market segments as the digital economy continues to have its influence on around the globe, especially in developing countries, such as China and India. There are two major competing technical challenges in this fast-changing application; reducing energy consumption for system level efficiency and high power density with increasing kW/m~2 from installed server racks. In traditional solutions, computer heat is removed by providing conditioned air to the computer room, where server fans draw the air through the racks and return it to the central equipment, or more common, through room-located computer room air conditioners (CRAC). The size of the ductwork and air flow volume limit the maximum heat density the system can handle. Currently, the practical value of power density a conventional CRAC unit can handle is 1.5 kW/m~2.
