High performance MCHE condenser design for commercial air conditioners

Performances of different heat exchangers are typically compared at constant air velocity or constant fan power. Our analysis revealed that the type of analysis chosen made a significant difference on the results. The comparison at constant fan power is mere relevant for HVAC system design and it is seen that increasing the MCHE coil depth provides no performance benefit after a point. We also found out that that increasing the face area of the coil results in significant performance increase. In some cases, with MCHE's it is possible to increase the face area without making the unit any bigger. We demonstrate one such design where the coil capacity is increased by 19.8% while keeping the fan power and unit size the same. For same coil capacity, the improved coil design provides a lower condensing temperature thereby increasing the COP of the system by 6.57%.
