Understanding pet overpopulation: Some argue it's a distribution problem; shelters say we're still killing adoptable animals

No one really knows how many dogs and cats are in the United States, but there's plenty debate about whether or not this country suffers from pet overpopulation. "When we started Petfinder.com 15 years ago, the average person would have said we don'thave an overpopulation problem, and now the general population says yes," says Betsy Saul, co-founder of the pet adoption Web site Petfinder.com. "On the other hand, people in the know used to say yes, there's an overpopulation problem; now people in the know say no."
