U.S. Under Secretary of State Tim Wirth warned in a recent interview with DIVERSITY that "the very foundation of agricultural research--germplasm--is at risk" as long as the U.S. does not ratify the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). "The treaty remains one of the State Department's top priorities. We feel very strongly that ratification is in the interest of the United States for two reasons," said the State Department's top official for global affairs.
