MOST of us, if not all, agree that the above point of view summarizes the purpose and spirit of an educational organization well. Written way back in 1961, it is even more pertinent in today’s world that is changing not only at a faster but perhaps at an accelerated pace. Most of us agree, again, that there is also a need to distinguish between education and training, and that the primary focus and loyalty of a university should be on the former, not the latter2. Training is necessarily geared towards a specific niche or skill set and, as such, its relevance depends heavily on specific socio-economic contexts and needs. Education, on the other hand, emphasizes those facets of learning that appear to possess a universal or long-term character in the personal as well as in the collective/social spheres.
