Organizing Mass Casualty Incidents - An update

Medical concepts and strategies keep changing constantly. Emergency response to mass casualties requires that all those involved have to work together with different organisations and public authorities, which are not part of the regular emergency medical service. In the last 25 years, throughout Germany the role of "chief emergency physicians" was established and in preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2006, mobile treatment units were set up [3, 4]. In 2007, special units of the "Medical Task Force" - funded by the German State - were presented and are now being established in all federal states. These represent a permanent part of the regional planning for mass casualty incidents. This article highlights current concepts and developments in different parts of Germany.
