It is hard to envision Caterpillar Inc. headquartered anywhere except Peoria, Ill. The equipment and engine-manufacturing giant has called the central Illinois city home since 1909, and the line "Caterpillar Inc., Peoria, Ill. ..." has long been a part of industry reporting. But in these days of corporate musical chairs, Caterpillar CEO Doug Oberhelman raised the possibility that Cat might at least consider a new home - largely because of what he said was Illinois' less-than-positive financial and business environment. In fact, the company commissioned a study to that effect. After Oberhelman at least nudged that door open, there were undoubtedly more than a few states and even countries that came to call.
