TWO FOR THE BOOKS: Generac gen-sets chosen to back up library and its special collections

Like all public libraries, the new Slover Library in downtown Norfolk, Va., loans books and offers a place to read a newspaper or look something up online at a computer. The 138,000 sq.ft. facility is also home to the Sargeant Memorial Collection, what library officials called the premier source for local history on the East Coast. The collection contains thousands of artifacts, including nearly 200 years of Norfolk newspaper microfilm and thousands of photo negatives. In all, the collection has more than 16,000 books, 3700 microforms and 20,000 photographs. Many items in the collection are fragile and need protection from light, heat and humidity. Photo negatives are stored in nine freezers set to 10℉ to help preserve them. To protect paper and other artifacts from the fading effects of ultraviolet rays, the collection uses LED lights instead of incandescent lamps.
