SWISS HIT: Saurer AG's purchase of Fairfield Manufacturing creates global opportunities for Fairfield, Graziano Trasmissioni

When it was finally announced in late January that Fairfield Manufacturing had been acquired, it ended the turning of one of the longest running rumor mills in recent memory. For the past few years, Fairfield, headquartered in Lafayette, Ind., had been one of those companies said to be in play several times, but in every case it turned out to be nothing more than talk and the company continued to prosper as a supplier of gear-driven final drives and custom gear systems. And as it turned out, when the rumors finally did come true, and the company was acquired by Switzerland's Saurer AG for an undisclosed sum, it may well have been one worth waiting for anyhow. As part of Saurer's Transmission Systems group along with Graziano Trasmissioni, Fairfield appears to be in a significantly better position to expand globally in terms of both geography and products. Between Graziano and Fairfield, the Saurer Transmission Systems group now has 12 plants in four countries capable of supplying a wide range of gear systems and components for everything from construction equipment to automobiles.
