For some time now, Engineered Machined Products Inc. (EMP) has been recognized as being on the cutting edge of engine and vehicle thermal management concepts. But these days, that edge appears to be quite a bit closer than before. The Escanaba, Mich., company has reported a growing commercial demand for its Diesel Grade cooling system components that include electrically operated fans, blowers, pumps, valves and controls. "We're getting some production opportunities to do what we call secondary cooling to help out on packaging for '07," said David Allen, vice president of product development. "The heat load is a little bigger than they thought and they can't fit all of it on the front of the engine. So they're looking to maybe offload some of that elsewhere. "A lot of the interest we're getting on secondary cooling is related to two things, packaging and fuel economy. With packaging, let's say you have a 475 hp rating and your base cooling system does OK. Now that same vehicle needs to accommodate a 625 hp rating. What do you do to supplement that cooling without having to grow the mechanical fan, which is big enough already? That's one reason they're looking at secondary cooling.
