The Brazilian state of Minas Gerais is not only known for its mines but also for the charm of its unspoilt old towns with their colonial-style architecture and cobbled streets and for the beauty of its landscape with its wild mountain relief whose extensive outcroppings contain a unique and spectacular flora. In January 2014 we started on a trip with a rental car from Belo Horizonte via Ouro Preto and the Sanctuary of Caraga to Diamantina. We were looking for rupiculous laelias. Whilst in Rio de Janeiro we visited an orchid nursery in Niteroi and one in Teresopolis in the Organ Mountains.Part one of this report recounts our experiences in Ouro Preto, which has been a World Heritage Site of UNESCO since 1980, and in the Sanctuary of Caraga where we had a very skilled guide to lead us up the mountains to find beauty, solitude and numerousorchids. We even witnessed a maned wolf coming up the steps in front of the church one evening to get his daily meal.
