Second Int'l Symposium on Acclimatization and Establishment of Micropropagated Plants

1 he Second International Symposium on Acclimatization and Establishment of Micropropagated Plants was held on the Mayan Riviera, Cancun, Mexico from the 22nd to the 24th of November 2004. The symposium was organized by CICY (Centra de Investigation Cientffica de Yucatan) and convened by both Dr. Jorge Santamaria from CICY and Dr. Yves Desjardins from the Horticultural Research Center at Laval University, Canada. The conference was held under the auspices of the ISHS Commission Biotechnology and Molecular Biology and was also sponsored by SEC, COQCYT, Agro-Bio Mexico and the Government of Yucatan. Despite the relatively low attendance, the symposium was a success from all points of view Seventy-nine participants, representing 18 countries, presenteda total of 63 papers of which 28 were orals. The conference was organized in 9 sessions dealing with the establishment limitations caused by the shoot physiology and by poor rooting, genetic stability, acclimatization problems in transformed plants, biotic and abiotic priming, scaling up and field performance problems and their impact on the micropropagation industry. A round table also took place to wrap up the event, present conclusions and future prospects for research in this field. Overall, the symposium was a great opportunity to meet great people, exchange knowledge and to reiterate the importance of the acclimatization problems to the micropropagation industry.
