Waterfall tufa deposits from the Deccan Basalt Province, India: Implications for weathering of basalts in the semi-arid Tropics

This paper reports the occurrence ol thick calcareous tufa deposits from the semi-arid parts of the Deccan Basalt Province, India, a non-karstic region. The tula deposits mainly occur at waterfall sites,Two well-known tufa sites were selected lor in-depth study. Field observations were supported by geomorphie and geological investigations ol the tula depositional sites; geochemical data of spring and streamwater samples collected during the post-monsoon, winter and summer; modelling of CO2 partial pressures {/>COj) and saturation indices; and mass balance calculations of carbonate species in stream-water.
