Steel company proposes DRI plant for Twin Ports region

International Metallics Corporation (IMC) proposes to build an US$800 million direct-reduced iron (DRI) project in Superior, Wisconsin, which would tap resources from Minnesota's Iron Range. Plans for the proposal recently cleared a hurdle, with the Douglas County Board of Supervisors approving an agreement with the city of Superior and its Redevelopment Authority, on behalf of IMC. DRI uses natural gas and iron ore pellets to create sponge iron (DRI), which can be used as an alternative steel-making process component to approaches that use blast furnaces and other methods.
