The UK may not meet its carbon targets in the 2020s, UK advisors on climate change warned, The Guardian reported. The advisors cites a looming "policy gap" and that reduction in emissions were not happening quickly enough to meet the targets. In 2012, UK greenhouse gas emissions rose 3.5 percent, primarily due to a colder-than-normal winter and increased utilization of coal-fired power. The UK is still set to meet its carbon emission reduction targets by 2017, but would likely miss its carbon reduction targets from 2017 to 2027. "There has been some positive progress, but there is clearly still a big challenge and we should not be complacent. If we stop now with policy, all we are doing is storing up risks for the future," said David Kennedy, chief executive of the committee, a statutory body that advised ministers on meeting climate targets.
