Indonesia to Develop Coal-Based Methanol and Olefins Projects

Indonesia is planning to build coal-based methanol and olefins units in East Kalimantan, Platts reported Jan. 31. The units would produce 300,000 tonnes per year of methanol and 300,000 tonnes per year of olefins, according to local media reports. Both units would require 1 million tonnes per year of coal to use as feedstock and cost a combined US$1 billion to build, according to the secretary-general of Indonesia's olefin and plastics industry association, Asosiasi Industri Aromatik, Olefin, dan Plastik Indonesia.
