Hawaii, Puerto Rico look to natural gas: EIA

The U.S. EIA has reported that Hawaii and Puerto Rico are currently looking to diversify their electricity generation mix by adding LNG. Hawaii imported a small-scale shipment of 0.75 million cubic feet in April, and Hawaiian Electric Co. has taken bids on other small shipments to eight generation plants, requesting 0.8 million tonnes annually overall. Hawaii has historically shied away from LNG because it could not absorb large shipments economically, but advances in small-scale LNG and lower prices connected to the U.S. natural gas boom have made it increasingly attractive.
