China Prepares for Commercial Shale Gas Production

EetroChina hopes to produce 1 billion cubic meters of shale gas in 2015 from China's Sichuan Basin, Reuters reported, citing a PetroChina executive. This would represent China's first commercial production of shale gas. China is expected to annually consume three times the amount of natural gas it consumed in 2010 by 2020. PetroChina is readying for shale gas exploration on three blocks in the basin: Changning, Wiyuan and Fushun-Yongchuan. The first two blocks total 6,567 sq km while the third one, under development by a joint venture of PetroChina's subsidiary and Shell, is 3,818 sq km.
