Jim Fulton, executive director of the David Suzuki Foundation, has a formidable list of suggestions for the car design community-some feasible and some only theoretically so. "We urgently need to reduce the damage the car does to our lives, our environment and our health," he says. "To start, we need fewer cars. To rely overwhelmingly on the automobile for daily transportation...especially commuting to work...is far too inefficient. So I'm beginning this session on cars to urge you all to get out of them. Urge your municipal, provincial and federal politicians to give us alternative transportation choices so that we are actually able to leave our cars at home. But most of us like our cars and most of us want to keep driving, at least some of the time. So our second task is to build a better car. GM is certainly taking a few steps in the right direction...working to produce hybrid vehicles... Cars are a huge source of tailpipe pollution, which is making us sick."
