Let the PC do the work - Part II: how remote, wired and wireless data logging can be achieved through low-cost PC-based instrumentation and free software

PC-based data logging, IP networking, the publishing of views of data onto a web site and GSM text messaging have broken down the cost versus complexity barriers that have, to date, barred progress in many environmental monitoring and data logging applications. Sharing and viewing data is now incredibly easy to do, and the prohibitive costs of just over a decade ago no longer exist: wiped away by the popularity of the web, digital mobile communications and low-cost PCs. On a final note, the one thing that has got the industry to where it is today is its ability to measure and record progress, and to employ technology that can acquire data from further and further afield.
