摘要

In 1938 Richard St Barbe Baker, already well-known abroad for his advocacy of great forestry projects to restore desert lands, went to Buckingham Palace to ask King George VI to visit America to inspect the Civilian Conservation Corps. What audacity, what single-minded determination! St Barbe, (for that was how so many knew him), was born at Beacon Hill in Hampshire in 1889. Although not of aristocratic blood, he held that birthright of every Englishman, the right of direct access to the Sovereign. But unlike most of us mortals he used that privilege to the full.
