Results just coming in from a new French-bred maize variety grown in the UK for the first time this season are described by the supplying seed merchant as 'just stunning'. The Maisadour-bred variety - named Mas 17.E - is claimed to produce 20% more freshweight per hectare than virtually all other varieties. "Most heavy-yielding varieties have a big plant and smallish cobs, but this variety has a massive plant and massive cobs, which means that, harvested at the right time, you get high levels of starch and high levels of digestible biomass," claimed David Bright of Bright Seeds Ltd. He said he had growers reporting yields of 20t/acre (49t/ha) freshweight and that, although the variety was classed as having medium maturity, he had been surprised howearly it was and thought it might be re-classified as medium-early.
