Cross compliance requirements have added another dimension to maize variety selection. Angela Rhodes reviews the new entries and top performers available this year on NIAB's Descriptive List.Maize variety selection has become a bit more complicated now that cross compliance requirements mean there is a cut off date for harvest. The need to get the crop off by October 15 at the latest means growers in marginal areas in particular will be considering growing even earlier varieties. In some cases this may be a sensible move but, in others, erring too far on the side of caution will cut yield and put up growing costs unnecessarily.
