Following one of the shortest housing periods in recent years, many cows have already been turned out to grass. Vet Jonathan Reader of the Kingfisher Veterinary practice, Somerset, looks at some of the problems associated with turnout. Here in Somerset we have experienced one of the shortest housing periods for many years. The mild, dry autumn allowed some cows to be kept out until mid-November and by the second week of February the first of our herds were out gain. However, even in this area it is important to note the large diversity of different management systems with varying reliance on grazing. This article attempts to cover some of the main concerns while appreciating that one rule does not apply to all.
