To ensure an average LWG approaching 0.8kg/day for every day over the period up to two-year calving, replacement heifers need to be motoring along in the first 12 weeks of life at well over that rate. Replacement heifers that fail to meet two-year calving targets are costing producers 5 pound/day, claims a leading milk replacer company. According to Volac's technical manager Maggie Gould, producers must decide what they want from their youngstock and feed them accordingly. "Producers are missing a huge opportunity in the first six weeks - we want to offer them a rearing approach that will meet their objectives," she declared.
