The UK dairy herd has been, and still is, a major part of the UK beef industry - over half of the clean cattle killed each year are born to a dairy cow and the dairy herd is a major source of replacement heifers for the national suckler herd. Overthe past decade, beef producers have become increasingly concerned over the changes that have occurred in the dairy industry, the most critical being the continued increase in the influence of the Holstein. For the beef finisher, this is reflected in a continual decline in the value of the finished carcases because of conformation.
