Survey shows a drop in dairy confidence

The annual Dairy Event survey has shown a loss of business confidence and support for an extended BSE cull. For the first time in four years, the annual survey of dairy farmers' attitudes and intentions, conducted by communications specialists Agrafaxand the RABDF, has recorded a drop in producers' short-term business confidence. Only 26% of those questioned at the 1996 European Dairy Farming Event were strongly optimistic about the prospects for their businesses over the next two years. This compares with a figure of 48% in last year's survey. Those milking under 70 cows seemed the least confident - only 12% in this category rated their prospects as 'good' (see table 1).
