FROM DEVON

Jill is the tenant of a 28ha county council starter farm at Cullompton, Devon. With the help of her husband Roger, she runs 30 Holstein Friesians and a flock of 100 milking sheep. It has been a rather depressing spring this year. The BSE problem stillhangs over us all, and the weather has not been kind to us either. We're now well into May, but today, and for the past few days, we've been suffering in the strong north easterly wind that's blowing, I've heard that it's blowing from Ireland and I canwell believe it. Again grass growth is suffering, particularly in our grazing area The silage area, with more covering on it, doesn't seem so badly affected. One thing's for certain, silage making will be later this year. Walking around our fields this morning, we noticed the silage grass has all gone a brownish colour at the ends.
