As a broad spectrum herbicide atrazine has been the benchmark for weed control in maize. Its removal from the market will not only make herbicide choice more complicated but it is also likely to put an extra ￡20/ha on herbicide costs and add an extrapass of the sprayer to cultivation costs. Although not finally withdrawn until September 2006, the sale and supply of atrazine has already been affected. Even where growers have enough atrazine for their requirements for this year, they should be testing alternative herbicides in their situation to ensure they know the way forward in future years.
