Field studies carried out by a leading forage maize breeder provide an interesting insight into the factors that determine earliness in individual varieties. A recent research project has highlighted the importance of the maize cob to overall crop drymatter and underlined why achieving full maturity of this component is so vital. The findings also show why significant inter-varietal performance differences exist and help to explain why it is that overall plant size is an increasingly unreliable measure of actual value in the clamp.
