Time spent looking carefully at building projects in their initial stages can prevent expensive mistakes later on, as Shirley Macmillan reports. Those that are in, are in. And if they are staying in, they're showing their commitment to dairying by making capital investment. For some producers it's their first major building work since the introduction of quotas, for others it's time to update units dating back to the sixties, but the message is the same whether you're planning to repair, demolish orrenew: think before you build, warns Dr Mike Kelly, SAC Auchincruive's head of building design services. "Spend time planning your options rather than wade in and make mistakes," he says. "You can see the results of haste years later when you go on farms, you ask yourself why on earth did they do that? Some units look designed - others look as though they just happened."
