Economic pressures and falling numbers of students have forced some agricultural colleges to sell off or close their dairy units, leaving the next generation of herd managers without the vital hands-on experience that makes them more employable. One Scottish agricultural college has, however, bucked the trend by investing in a new high-tech dairy unit specifically designed to give students the opportunity to work in a large herd environment with the latest milking and management technology. Barony College sits in the heart of Scotland's main dairy area just 10 miles north of Dumfries and offers a number of land-based courses. The college farms around 550 acres of arable and grassland which supports a 300-cow dairy unit with sheep, suckler cows and a red deer enterprise.
