As we enter the first week of December, the cows and heifers are still out at grass all day and we have an abundance of grass, which is still growing. If early bite 1995 is anything like 1994, when we started grazing on January 18, then we are not infor a long winter, but I think that a late spring could be in line. The only problem with this mild weather is the flies. This year, with such a mild autumn, I have never seen so many flies. Nothing seems to destroy them. Everyone is having the same problem and milking time is hell as these flies are the biting kind. We have treated all the buildings and the cows have been fly-tagged, sprayed, you name it we have done it, but nothing seems to kill them. The vet says that they are now immune to any product on the market so if there is a firm in the UK which thinks it has a product which will control these pests and wishes to test the it elsewhere, please get in touch.
