Taking a little more care of calves in their first few days could save dairy farmers a lot of money. Scouring is the greatest single cause of death and most common disease among calves, affecting about 20% of young cattle and killing around 100,000 each year in the UK. It costs the dairy industry some 15 million pound a year - a cost which producers should not have to shoulder, according to Dr Bob Ward, senior lecturer at Liverpool University's Veterinary Faculty.
