David farms 183ha in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park with the help of his son Matthew. They run a 160-strong herd of pedigree Holstein Friesians, some of which are naturally polled. What a difference a month can make. Four weeks ago we were feeling the effects of the drought, while now we are paddling about in mud wishing that it was dry again. It has been a case of instant grass, but also instant mud. A week ago we decided that the high yielders had better stay inside as it was so soft underfoot and they were already getting a full winter ration. We had to prepare the cubicles quickly and now it's back to twice daily scraping and bedding them up every other day.
