Supraicosahedral heteroborane chemistry traces its origin to the seminal work of Hawthorne and co-workers1 in which 1,2-closo-C2B_(10)H_(12)was reduced and then treated with a source of Co~(2+)and Cp~-(Cp~=cyclopentadienide).On aerial work-up the major product was the Co(III)species 4-Cp-4,l,6-closo-CoC_2B_(10)H_(12).The docosahedral structure of this compound was established by a subsequent structural study by Churchill and DeBoer.
