Mineral Economics -- Progress report on the pilot project to implement ISO 9001-2 quality assurance systems in mineral exploration companies in Quebec

An industry committee led by the Quebec Prospectors Association (APQ), the Quebec Mining Association (AMQ), the Association of Professional Geologists and Geophysicists of Quebec (APGGQ), and the Geological Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (GeoSoc) undertook to develop and implement a quality assurance program specific to the mineral industry according to the ISO 9000 standard. The Tecsult Group, an international engineering firm with experience in the implementation of ISO 9000 programs, was selected to manage this project The pilot project is divided into three phases with the following objectives: 1) determine the methodology and quality control problems present from grass roots exploration to project feasibility, in order to establish priorities and guidelines covering these activities: 2) develop methods and procedures adapted to the minerals industry that are compatible with ISO 9000 requirements: and 3) implement based on the procedures and methods developed in phase II, ISO 9001 or 9002 quality assurance systems in a group of mineral exploration companies. This pilot project will hope fully significantly reduce the initial effort required from any company in the mineral sector to develop a continuous quality assurance/quality improvement system.
