Phylogeny of Aphantochilinae and Strophiinae sensu Simon (Araneae; Thomisidae)

The systematics of Thomisidae, which is one of the largest families of Araneae and contains more than two thousand species (Platnick 2012), is still obscure and based mainly on the works of Simon (1895) and Ono (1988). The family is currently divided into seven subfamilies: Aphantochilinae, Bominae, Dietinae, Stephanopiinae, Stiphropodinae, Strophiinae and Thomisinae (Ono 1988); however, this classification is not corroborated by more recent cladistic studies (Benjamin et al. 2008; Benjamin 2011). Aphantochilinae and Strophiinae species prey on ants, among which Aphantochilus stands out for its marked myrmecomorphy (Oliveira & Sazima 1984; Castanho & Oliveira 1997; Cushing 1997, 2012).
