Rising material and labour costs are not the primary causes of huge cost escalations in steam assisted gravity drainage oilsands projects, according to George Brindle, manager of facilities engineering at Laricina Energy Ltd.Speaking at the Annual Oil Sands Trade Show and Conference in Edmonton last month, Brindle said an analysis of in situ projects developed in Alberta since the mid 1990s refutes the "myth" of spiraling costs for steel and workers, while raising questions about how efficiently the projects are being designed and constructed.
