Mestled in the hinterland of northern Ontario, the Cobalt mining camp possesses a rich history of discovery, rivalry, booms and crashes. At the root of it all is one of Canada's most swift staking rushes, at the heart of the hunt for silver. At the turn of the twentieth century, there was little suspicion of the existence of mineral riches that have since made the Canadian Shelf of Precambrian rock one of the world's greatest producers. The area was largely agricultural, with a fur trading post and some forestry activity.
