After World War II many ex-servicemen, mostly from England, were settled on farms in Mrewa, Mtoko, Mayo, Nyati Block, Macheke, Headlands, Hoyuyu, Virginia etc. There were soon built by and for them, throughout those once prosperous tobacco growing areas, five country clubs, three churches, and a Freemason's Lodge. After Zimbabwe's independence in 1980 most farmers had to vacate these properties by 1982 except for a few farms in Mtoko-South, which comprised the Virginia area and further south and west, towards Macheke. So for about 35 years there was a thriving community and much social activity over weekends at the sports clubs. One club in particular boasted quite a few talented actors and actresses. This meant that at least once a year they wouldstage, normally, a variety show in the evening after sporting activities and refreshments and drinks from the bar, with comical results.
