Modification of the Vierverlaten evaporator station.

Owing to the secularly increasing energy costs, the Dutch Suiker Unie company decided to optimize its specific energy consumption and achieve leadership in this area among beet sugar factories. By altering and expanding the evaporator station from six to seven effects, and realigning the heat balance, in the Vierverlaten factory, it was possible to obtain considerable primary energy savings. To this end, existing Robert evaporators were transferred from the closed Breda factory, and the sixth and seventh effects of the evaporator station were converted to falling-film plate evaporators. Other sugar factories have had in part negative experiences in operating falling-film plate evaporators at high dry substance levels. Suiker Unie has benefited from the insights thus gained and taken them into account in engineering the evaporator plant, in order to ensure operational reliability.
